Long shaft machining is common in heavy machinery, energy equipment, marine components, industrial rollers, transmission systems, and general machinery manufacturing. However, selecting a CNC lathe for a long shaft is not simply a matter of choosing a longer machine.

A shaft may physically fit between the chuck and tailstock but still experience deflection, vibration, or unstable cutting during machining. Workpiece diameter, total length, turning length, weight, material, clamping method, and support position all affect the final machine configuration.
For this reason, the best way to select a CNC lathe for long shaft machining is to start with the actual workpiece drawing.
What Problems Do Customers Usually Have?
A typical inquiry may simply say:
“We need a CNC lathe for a 5-meter shaft.”
But 5 meters alone is not enough information to select the machine.
For example, a Φ100 × 5000 mm shaft and a Φ1000 × 5000 mm shaft have the same length, but their machining requirements are completely different.
The larger shaft requires much greater consideration of workpiece weight, chuck capacity, spindle torque, bed rigidity, guideway width, and workpiece support.
Long and slender shafts create another problem: deflection.
When the length-to-diameter ratio increases, cutting forces can cause the workpiece to bend or vibrate. In this case, simply using the chuck and tailstock may not provide sufficient support. A steady rest or follow rest may be required.
What Information Should You Provide?
To recommend a suitable CNC lathe, the machine supplier should know:
The drawing is especially important because it shows which sections need OD turning, facing, grooving, threading, boring, or other operations.
It also helps determine where the workpiece can be clamped and where a steady rest can be positioned.
How Should the Machine Be Configured?
For long shaft machining, several machine components should be evaluated together.
Tailstock
The tailstock supports the free end of the shaft and helps maintain stability during turning. Xinheng's CNC lathe is equipped with a manual tailstock as standard, with a hydraulic tailstock available as an option.

Steady Rest
A steady rest provides additional support between the chuck and tailstock. It is particularly useful when machining long or relatively slender shafts that may deflect under cutting forces.

Follow Rest
A follow rest moves with the carriage and supports the workpiece close to the cutting area. It can be useful for certain slender-shaft turning operations.

Chuck
The chuck must match the shaft diameter, weight, shape, and required clamping force. Large and heavy shafts may require a larger 4-jaw chuck or another suitable workholding solution.

Machine Bed and Guideway
As shaft diameter and weight increase, machine rigidity becomes increasingly important. A wider and heavier bed provides a stronger foundation for demanding long-shaft machining.

Recommended CNC Lathe Configuration
Xinheng offers several CNC lathe ranges for different long-shaft applications.
The 550/600 mm guideway CNC lathe series covers workpiece diameters up to approximately Φ1250 mm depending on model, with different bed-length configurations and workpiece capacities up to 4 tons.
For larger shafts and rollers, the 970 mm guideway series includes CK61125E, CK61140E, CK61160E and CK61180E. It provides workpiece lengths of 3000, 5000 and 8000 mm, corresponding turning lengths of 2800, 4800 and 7800 mm, and a maximum workpiece weight of 10 tons. The distance between centers can also be customized for longer applications.
For very large and heavy shafts, Xinheng also offers heavy-duty CNC lathes. The 1100 mm guideway series covers workpiece lengths up to 20,000 mm and workpiece weights up to 16 tons, while heavier machine series are available for workpieces up to 32 tons or more.
Inquiry Checklist
Before requesting a quotation, please confirm:
Do not select a long-bed CNC lathe based only on the total shaft length. The correct machine should provide enough machining capacity while also ensuring proper clamping, support, rigidity, torque, and tool travel.
